Be transported back 100 years to Wessex at Christmas
Get in the mood for Christmas with this atmospheric show
Transport yourself back more than 100 years to Christmas in Thomas Hardy’s Wessex. The Mellstock Band invites you to join them in an uproarious celebration of dance, drink and general misbehaviour as carried on at Christmas in many Wessex villages – along with sobering admonitions from puritans, parsons and angels.
The band have put together a Christmas show, centred on the traditions which were central to Christmas celebrations and the associated activities of drinking and singing! They will perform songs, tunes and tales from Hardy’s Wessex in period costume.
Included in the revelry are carols dedicated to dancing, bell-ringing and cider, and the Devil’s own tunes, with parsons and preachers caught in the crossfire. Stories and poems from Dorset stalwarts Thomas Hardy and William Barnes will create the Christmas atmosphere.
Come and join us for a Wessex Christmas in the decorated Arts and Crafts Barlow – itself over 100 years old.
