Albert Haydock was born in Edgworth in 1897, the only child of Samuel Haydock, a cotton spinner. The family lived at 14 Martin Street, Edgworth and Albert attended St. Anne’s Primary School then the Bolton Church Institute School (forerunner of Canon Slade). At his secondary school he proved to be an accomplished sportsman representing the school at football, cricket and athletics. He was also quite a scholar achieving a scholarship and winning prizes for Maths and Languages. Upon leaving school he worked as an engineer at Westinghouse in Manchester and as a clerk.
