Alfred Whitehead was born in Edgworth in 1898, the son of Herbert Whitehead and Edith Ridge. Alfred’s service record shows that at the time of attestation – 6th June 1916 – he and his parents were living at 301, Bolton Road, Edgworth, and Alfred was employed as a clerk.2 He was enlisted to ‘carry out duties as clerk’ in the Inland Waterways & Docks Section of the Royal Engineers on July 16th 1917. The only other information found relates to his immediate family.
