Ellis Ball was born in Bolton in 1897, the son of William Ball and Catherine Regent. It seems that his father died when he was 2 years old, and his mother Catherine then remarried a William Green. In 1901 the family were living in Back Charles Street, Bolton. At some point in the following years Ellis moved to the National Childrens’ Home at Crowthorn, Edgworth, but In 1911, he was in board and lodgings with the family of James and Alice Bentley in High Street, Turton, whilst working as a Piecer in a local Cotton Mill.
