Ernest Grime was born on 14 February 1897 in Darwen. He was the son of James Henry Grime and his wife, Ann Grime (nee Ainsworth).(1) The family are recorded in the 1911 Census as living at 15 School View, Edgworth, with Ernest, aged 14, working at Know Mill as a ‘Bleach Croft’ labourer. After his mother’s death in 1914 and father’s remarriage, they moved to 9 Hollybank, Entwistle and Ernest became engaged to Lillian Ashworth. Ernest enlisted at Darwen in March 1915 aged 18. He served in the 149th (County Palatine) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, and took part in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Although he survived this and other battles sadly he sustained serious injuries later in the war and died of wounds on 9 October 1918 aged 21. He is commemorated on the War Memorial in St Anne’s Church, Turton.
