Ernest Walter Trim enlisted at Bolton on 17th January, 1915, first serving as a Private with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, 10th Section. (Regimental Number 047739). He was then promoted to Lance Corporal to serve with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, 3rd Battalion. (Regimental Number 19427).
