When Jonah was recruited, he was living at 285 Bolton Road, aged 35, a Master Painter and obviously very proud of the fact, as his recruitment record is amended to show that he was not just an ordinary painter. He signed up on 3 December 1915. At that time 172 men from the village took the oath over two nights. A copy of the recruitment record exists showing his signature. He was number 228379 and became a private in the Royal Engineers. His rank was also listed as “Pioneer”.
