Samuel was in the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards, along with his friend William Mather. He was the son of Albert and Mary of 3 School View and died on 31st March 1916, aged only 20. He is buried at Potijze Burial Ground in Belgium.. Samuel was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. There is no service record in existence for Samuel. His brother John “Jack” Holden, of the Royal Naval Division, was injured a year later in November 1917.(17) His older brother James escaped the war due to injury.
