Sydney joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1915, serving first in Egypt then in France. His rank was Bombardier, which is the equivalent of corporal. He died of wounds on 11 May 1917 and is buried in Etaples cemetery, France -the site of the military hospital. He was 20 years old.(16) His father, Frank, received a war gratuity of £8 10s 0d.(2) Sydney is remembered on: Bolton County Roll of Honour(19) Wesleyan Methodist memorial, Bolton Road, Blackburn and the St. Anne’s, Turton memorial.
